Potawatomi State Park
Stugeon Bay, WI
Potawatomi State Park is located west and a little north of the city of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. But, even though it's technically a bit north of the town, it's actually on the south side of the body of water that's Sturgeon Bay. Hope that's not too confusing :)
Like all state parks, Potawatomi State Park has a wealth of wilderness in and around the campground. It seems like most of the trees in the campground itself are older... beautifully tall and shady!
The entrance road into the park, after you leave the visitor center, takes an interesting route through the woods to the campsites. There are several very large trees that are in the middle of the road way. They've split the left and right portions of the road around these trees. I'm guessing this is a bit disconcerting to navigate through with a very large RV rig.
Unfortunately, there's no sandy beach at Potawatomi State Park. The only section of "beach" they have is very stony-- not the best for laying a towel down on for tanning. But, it's a great place to practice your stone skipping.
The observation tower on the northwest end of the park is a great place to get some elevation and look around Sturgeon Bay and surrounding areas. On clear days you can see across Green Bay, which is about 15 miles away.
There also many nice, fairly level hiking trails throughout the park, which make for nice cross country ski trail in the winter.
